Specialised Breathing Techniques to Calm the Mind

Mindfulness practices such as Yoga, meditation and in particular, specific breathing techniques, profoundly impacts the health and balance of our autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls the function of the heart, liver, intestines and other organs, as well as impacting upon blood pressure, sugar levels, and muscular tension.

It has been shown that when particular breathing methods are applied the parasympathetic nervous system is activated which tends to slow the heart, lower stress levels and blood pressure. These breathing methods (known as Pranayama in yoga) are also highly beneficial for those suffering from asthma, anxiety, depression and panic disorders.

Yoga & Breathing Techniques

The focus of these training sessions is related to, and in support of the main course components - Meditation and Intrapersonal Skills Training. They are not taught independently outside of this training program.

Although yoga is much more than a stress-reduction method, stress adversely affects a wide range of health conditions, and yoga is arguably the most comprehensive approach to working with stress. Current research shows that stress appears to contribute to such major diseases such as heart attacks, diabetes and osteoporosis, as well as other more common conditions like migraines, ulcers, blood pressure and irritable bowel syndrome - to name a few. Exercise, quality relaxation and emotional resilience are essential in the prevention and recovery of most health issues.

Hatha Yoga is a potent form of physical movement which also incorporates directed breathing practices and relaxation techniques. Hatha Yoga grounds you physically and works on the body by improving strength, flexibility, postural alignment and core stability. Current scientific research into the benefits of Yoga show that it also rejuvenates the nervous system, strengthens immunity, and induces deeper states of rest required for good quality sleep, concentration and over all wellbeing.

The classes are designed to be practised by people of all abilities, needs and fitness levels.

Course structure

In conjunction with Meditation and Intrapersonal Skills Training these components of the course require a separate initial 2 hour training session for Hatha Yoga and Specialised Breathing Techniques - when combined. The duration of a private class is 90 minutes.

Follow-up classes can then be adapted to suit your available time frame.
